The development

OpenAI announced GPT-4o on May 13, 2024, describing a model spanning text, vision, and audio. Its launch page included an interview-preparation demonstration. Text and image capabilities began rolling out first, with other modalities planned through an iterative rollout. [1]

Practice the turn, not just the answer

The demonstration made a natural idea tangible: an AI practice partner could interact through speech. Our coaching takeaway is to rehearse turn-taking. A written answer can look concise while taking too long aloud. Spoken practice exposes the time spent searching for a starting point and the moment when an example becomes a detour.

Set an exercise with one question, one answer, and one follow-up. Ask for feedback after the turn rather than constant interruption. Use your own recording to check length and clarity, because an assistant’s impressions can be mistaken. The aim is to improve how you explain your experience. A launch demonstration does not prove that voice access was available to every user that month or that the model could reliably score interview performance.
