The development
OpenAI introduced the Realtime API in public beta on October 1, 2024. It enabled developers to build low-latency speech-to-speech experiences. This was an application-building capability, not a finished interview-coaching product automatically available to every candidate. [1]
Waiting is part of a good mock interview
Our interpretation is that real-time systems make turn-taking a design decision. If a practice assistant speaks before you finish thinking, it can reward rushed answers. If it waits too long, a session can feel disconnected. A useful mock interview gives you room to pause and asks a follow-up only after the answer has reached a natural stopping point.
Evaluate a voice tool with an ordinary rehearsal instead of judging it from one impressive exchange. Include a pause, a self-correction, and a longer example. Observe whether it preserves the thread and whether its next question responds to what you actually said. These checks measure the practice experience. They do not establish interview success, and they should remain separate from any vendor’s claims about model speed or quality.
